John Pope
Having enjoyed a long but non-creative career in the Civil Service, John took up ceramics just before retirement in 1995. Evening classes followed by various day courses gave him a thoroughly pleasurable grounding in most aspects of pottery making. And in retirement, this new-found creative process has proved a most satisfying and absorbing journey, his work slowly progressing from simple, modelled, brightly glazed earthenware to more complex, interpretive and subtlely coloured pieces. Working with stoneware and earthenware clays (including raku-fired items),John now designs and makes a diverse range of ceramic forms such as stylised birds and other creature figures, decorative vases and bowls, unique clocks etc. His work is expressive, tactile and lovingly crafted, often influenced by Art Deco style and form. It has been exhibited widely in the West Country
